The Irish Community Archive Network

Working Together for our Heritage

Historical Ballinrobe is a member of the Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN).

Established by the National Museum of Ireland in 2008, iCAN is working with community volunteers across Ireland, helping them to establish and manage their own digital archives in partnership with the Heritage Council and participating local authority Heritage Officers.

Community archives reflect a shared history, identity, experience or interest, and are created by, with, and for the community. They encompass a range of non-traditional archival material including ephemera, material and visual culture and oral histories, as well as original documents. They tend to reflect a broad community heritage interest including built, industrial, natural and intangible heritage, and archaeology.

The iCAN archives are contributory, which means that anyone, anywhere in the world can contribute their photos, maps, letters, records, stories and documents to help build local collections. As well as documenting information about local heritage sites, folklore, traditions and well-known local people, the archives are also a valuable resource for genealogists.

We invite you to explore the Historical Ballinrobe archive, contribute your photos and information, or volunteer with the group.
